Edwin Roy Ember

December 18, 1925 ~ January 17, 2019 (age 93)

Edwin Roy Ember, son of the late Sally and Harold Ember was born on December 18, 1925 in Brooklyn, New York. He died on January 17, 2019 in Marion, Alabama.

He was preceded by his wife of 37 years, Connie Nimrod Ember.

He is survived by his sons, Steve (Jan) Ember of Sarasota, Florida and David (Elisa) Ember of Cottondale, Alabama; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; sister, Meryl (Bill) Melton of St. Louis, Missouri and many other relatives.

After graduating from Erasmus High School, Ed joined the Navy and served from 1943 to 1945.  His career was mostly spent in the retail business.  He spent many years in management at Leon’s in Selma.  He also worked for the U. S. Census Bureau after retiring from Leon’s.

Ed was an avid reader, as well as an avid football fan of the Georgia Bulldogs.  However, he never forgot his Brooklyn Dodgers.  He was extremely proud of his Navy service; a highlight was his Military Honor Flight to Washington, D. C. with fellow veterans.  Ed was a long-time member of Temple Mishkan Israel.  He served numerous terms as President of the congregation, conducting the occasional service and funeral, and docent when visitors would come to see the Temple, which is on a list of historic buildings.

He and Connie often reminisced about boating on the Alabama River and “junking” in towns far and near.

Graveside services will be Sunday, January 20, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Live Oak Cemetery with Hanna Berger officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Temple Mishkan Israel in Selma, AL or a charity of your choice in Ed’s name.
