Barbara Duke Sciple passed away September 20, 2025 at the age of 83. She was born May 27, 1942 in Muscadine Junction, Alabama to the late James Arthur Duke, Sr. and Murrell Lucille Thomas Duke.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John V. Sciple, Jr.; son, Jerry Longcrier; brothers, Roger (Carolyn) Duke and Randy (Julia) Duke and great-nephew, Sidney Riley.

Barbara had a remarkable ability to create moments of joy for her family, particularly her grandchildren, whom she adored and doted on. She was not only their grandmother but also a skilled seamstress, crafting beautiful clothes for each of them, along with exquisite wedding dresses that showcased her talent and care. Alongside her love for sewing, Barbara found solace in reading and had a special fondness for watching birds from the comfort of her window. Her bird feeders and hummingbird feeders were a testament to her appreciation of nature’s beauty, providing her with endless delight.

Travel was another passion for Barbara, particularly the cherished trips she took with her son, Jerry, before his passing. Together, they created beautiful memories, visiting enchanting places such as Disney, Helen, Georgia, and even Elvis’ homeplace in Mississippi. These adventures reflected her zest for life and her desire to share experiences with those she loved most.

Known as the holiday host and matriarch of her family, Barbara was famous for her ability to bring everyone together during festive gatherings. She ensured that there was always plenty to eat at her table, believing that sharing a meal was a sacred act of love. Her culinary skills were unparalleled; she made the best chocolate 7 layer cake, cherry cream cheese pie, chicken and dumplings, and fried chicken—all of the Southern staples that filled her home with warmth and laughter.

She is survived by her daughters, Cathy Sciple, Robin (Don) Perry; son-in-law, George Britton; grandchildren, Leslie (Boone) Hobson, Leigh (Ricky) Peoples, Chelsea (Mason) Davis, Heather Britton; great-grandchildren, Lawson Davis, Wheeler Davis, Granger Davis, Draven Peoples, Haisleigh Peoples, Jace Hobson, Kayleigh Hobson, Maddie Hobson and Oliver Hobson; special friends, Larry White.
