Ben Simmons

Ben Simmons, Jr. passed away July 20, 2025 at the age of 66. He was born March 11, 1959 to Bennie Edwin Simmons, Sr. and the late Karen Pierson Simmons.

Ben was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, whose impact on all who knew him will resonate for years to come.

Ben married his high school sweetheart, Julie, and together they crafted a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and fulfilling memories. Their life together, deeply rooted in faith, saw them as steadfast members of Elkdale Baptist Church throughout their marriage. Ben's unwavering commitment to his family was evident in every aspect of his life, as he fostered a nurturing environment for their three beloved children and four cherished grandchildren. Family time was a treasure for Ben, where he found immense joy in creating lasting memories, especially playing with his grandchildren.

An enthusiastic sports coach, Ben poured his heart into coaching his kids and grandkids, whether it was baseball on the field with his son or supporting his daughters' softball teams from the sidelines. His encouragement and guidance not only molded young athletes but also exemplified his character as a supportive and loving father.

Ben's love for the great outdoors was a defining part of his spirit. He enjoyed hunting, whether it was pursuing deer or turkey, and could always be found trying to catch whatever swam into sight, relishing in the tranquility of rivers, lakes, and ponds. His passion for nature was infectious and was often accompanied by his joyful sense of humor, delighting friends and family alike with his playful jokes and spirited personality.

Above all, Ben was a man of many talents; a true jack of all trades, he approached every venture with meticulous care and dedication. He took pride in his work and in helping others, readily offering assistance with any projects his family or friends undertook. In recent years, he discovered joy in his portable saw mill, continuing his legacy of craftsmanship and hard work.

As a loving and devout follower of Christ, Ben's faith guided his life and inspired those around him. His presence brought warmth to gatherings, and his comforting nature left an indelible mark on the hearts of his loved ones.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Karen Pierson Simmons; mother and father-in-law, Marvin and Gladys Melton; brothers-in-law, Gary Melton, Bill Bradley and Ronnie McElroy and niece, Kristin McElroy.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Julie Melton; children, Kendall (David) Smith, Kelly (Ware) Cox and Kevin (Kimberly) Simmons; grandchildren, Clifton Smith, Crawford Smith, Dawson Cox and Sadie Cox; father, Bennie Edwin Simmons, Sr.; sister, Kathy (Bobby) Weber and Kristie McElroy; sisters-in-law, Ann Bradley, Barbara (Roy) Moore, Jane Henderson and Susan McDonald.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Elkdale Baptist Church with Rev. Matthew Jacobs and Rev. Lee Tate officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing. Interment will follow at New Live Oak Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 12:00 p.m., prior to the service. Friends are invited back to the church after the service for a celebration of life, where refreshments will be served.
