Betty Joyce Crawford Nichols passed away September 24, 2025 at the age of 88 in Mobile. She was born July 26, 1937 in Athens, Alabama to the late David Wilson Crawford and Bertha Durham Crawford.
For 37 years, she held the position of office manager at the Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of Selma, a role that allowed her to connect with countless individuals. Yet, beyond her professional accomplishments, it was her warm heart and nurturing spirit that truly defined her legacy. Betty was famed for her turkey and dressing and her exquisite chocolate pies, which were more than just dishes—they were the very essence of her generosity and care. Each Thanksgiving, she would prepare these beloved meals in abundance, ensuring that every family member had a warm meal and a seat at her table, fostering an environment of togetherness and gratitude.
Her personality shone brightly in all aspects of her life. Loyal and kind, Betty's gentle warmth touched everyone she encountered. It is said that everyone loved her—for her comforting presence, her infectious laughter, and her ability to make anyone feel cherished and valued. She moved through life with a steadfast belief in God, serving as a strong Christian lady whose faith inspired those around her.
Prior to moving to Mobile with her husband, Betty enjoyed many years as a proud resident of Selma, where she became an integral part of the lives of many. A cherished member of Creekwood Church of Christ in Mobile, she continued to share her love and devotion with her community, embodying the very teachings she held dear.
Betty lived for her family, dedicating herself to being a caregiver and confidant. In every act of love she performed, it was evident that her heart was anchored in her loved ones. The lessons she imparted and the memories she created are now cherished treasures, carried forward by those fortunate enough to have known her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Alexander Nichols, Jr.; siblings, Gladys Ester Crawford Griffin, Florence Irene Crawford Campbell, Melvin Lee Crawford, Catherine Crawford Horton Lynn, Margaret Crawford Wilson, Bobby Glenn Crawford, Roger Dale Crawford, Thomas Lee "Tommie" Crawford, Joseph Walter "Joe" Crawford, Hettie E. Crawford Calvert, Clara Elizabeth Crawford Springer, William David Crawford and Mary Lou Crawford Simmons.
She is survived by her daughters, Belinda Nichols (Billy) Callaway and Lisa Nichols Whatley; grandchildren, Elisabeth Dawn (Jeff) Williams, Stephen (Courtney) Chance, Jr., Kayla Elisabeth Whatley, and William Ryan Whatley; great-grandchildren, Adrian Nicole (Austin) Bosarge, Austin Vickery, Maddie Chance and Connor Chance; great-great-granddaughter, Lainey James Bosarge; sister, Viva Crawford Baldwin and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will hold a private service, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Bill at New Live Oak Cemetery.
