Cheryl Summers

Cheryl Denise “Cherri” Chapman Summers, 62, passed away on March 14, 2026, at Vaughan Regional Medical Center in Selma, Alabama, surrounded by the love of her life, her daughter, and mother.

Cherri was a woman of incredible courage, strength, and determination. For more than ten years she battled chronic kidney disease and endured many hardships, including becoming a double amputee. Through it all, she never gave up. She faced every challenge with bravery and pushed herself each day to keep going for the people she loved most—her husband, daughter Kayla, and her precious grandchildren.

Cherri had a gentle, kind heart and was known for the love she showed to those around her. In her healthy years, she enjoyed cooking and keeping a welcoming home, and she especially loved spending time outdoors in the sunshine. She loved the beach, tanning in the summer months. As her health turned making schedules very hard, she looked forward to taking random day trips with her beloved husband, David, who was truly her best friend. The two shared 32 years of marriage filled with love and devotion.

Nothing in her life brought her more joy than her grandchildren. When she found out she was going to be a grandmother to Rhett, she was over the moon and felt unstoppable in her determination to improve her health so she could enjoy every moment with him. Later, she welcomed her granddaughter Raegan, whose personality brought her endless happiness. Cherri treasured Sundays in recent years because they meant family time—having everyone gathered together, watching her grandchildren play, and enjoying the moments that mattered most. She also loved her son-in-law, who always made her laugh and could talk about movies with her for hours.

She was preceded in death by her father, Vernon Eugene Chapman; step-father, B.C. Moore and brother-in-law, Dale Nichols

She is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, John David Summers; her daughter, Kayla Summers (Jonathan) Orvis; her cherished grandchildren, Rhett Lane and Raegan Orvis; her mother, Barbara Jane Chapman Moore; her siblings, Steve (Susan) Chapman, Susie Chapman Nichols and Danny (Robin) Chapman; nieces and nephews, Colton Chapman, Tanner Nichols, Gracie Chapman, Paul Chapman, Daniel Chapman as well as many extended family members and dear friends who will miss her deeply.

Cherri will always be remembered for her strength, her loving heart, and the devotion she had to her family. Though she faced many challenges in life, she never stopped fighting and never stopped loving those closest to her.

The family will have a private service.

Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
