J. Cooper DeRamus, Jr. passed away December 25, 2025 at the age of 99, just 17 days shy of being a centenarian . He was born January 11, 1926 to the late Jefferson Cooper DeRamus, Sr. and Sallie Pearl Vinzant DeRamus.
Cooper was a proud veteran who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, fulfilling his duty in the South Pacific as an electrician's mate. His military service not only exemplified his commitment to his country but also sparked a lifelong passion for working with his hands. Throughout his life, he was known for his ability to repair and create; whether it was tinkering with household items or taking on the challenge of working on sewing machines, he thrived on solving problems and helping others.
He was a devoted member and Sunday School teacher at Central Baptist Church in Selma for more than 50 years, before the church became Valley Grande Baptist Church. After moving to Clanton in 2002, he joined First Methodist Church, where he faithfully volunteered with the Methodist Men’s group. A strong Christian, he deeply loved the Lord and lived his faith through service to others.
His career as an insurance agent with Liberty National spanned many years, providing him the opportunity to touch the lives of countless clients through his unwavering dedication and support. Yet, it was not just in his professional life that Cooper excelled; he is remembered most fondly by his family and friends for the kindness he imbued in every interaction. A remarkable man with a spirit as bright as the sun, Cooper put everyone above himself. Those close to him recount never hearing a cross word from his lips. Instead, he always sought the good in every situation, turning challenges into moments of growth and learning.
Cooper had an unyielding love for the great outdoors. He found joy in camping trips filled with laughter and connection. However, nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His heart brimmed with pride and affection whenever they were near, and he made it his mission to create moments that would last a lifetime.
Beyond his love for family and nature, Cooper also had a deep appreciation for woodworking and the art of craftsmanship. His hands helped shape many beloved creations that will serve as lasting reminders of his talent and creativity. He was a vital presence in the lives of those around him, not only for his skillset but for the unconditional love he shared.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy "Dot" DeRamus; grandson, Eric DeRamus Wood.
He is survived by his children, Sheila D. Wood, Kathy D. (Arthur C.) Zuelzke and Jeff C. (Sandra) DeRamus ; eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
