David Moorer Massey, Jr.

David Moorer Massey, Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 14, 2025, at the age of 74, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Selma, Alabama on March 6, 1951 to the late David Moorer Massey, Sr. and Nellie Latham Massey. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nell (Willard) Sewell.

David married the love of his life—the girl he met at just fourteen—beginning a story that would span fifty-five beautiful years of devotion, laughter, and family. Their earliest days together were simple and sweet: dates at the Wilby Theater followed by long walks home, hand in hand, dreaming of the life they hoped to build. On June 6, 1970, at Central Baptist Church in Selma, they made those dreams a promise… and they kept that promise every day that followed.

He devoted his early years to the family-owned business, City Electric Co., eventually taking the reins, and later spent twenty-three faithful years as an electrician at International Paper’s Riverdale Mill before retiring. David was a man who put his heart into everything he touched.

One of his greatest joys was taking to the sky. An avid pilot, he flew out of Sky Harbor in Orrville, lifting family and friends over the countryside he loved so dearly. He flew them to Orlando to see loved ones, and even all the way to Texas—just to cheer on Alabama football. Those flights weren’t just trips; they were memories stitched together by adventure, pride, and the simple joy of being together.

At home, David found peace in woodworking. What he created was more than furniture—end tables, pie safes, pieces shaped and sanded by his hands—it was love crafted into something his children and grandchildren will hold onto for generations. Every nail, every groove held a memory. Alongside his children, he built their back porch, his shed, and just about anything else he could dream up from wood. Their home stands as a living testament to his talent, his patience, and his heart.

To know David was to love him. He embodied the quiet strength and gracious spirit of a true Southern Gentleman. Generosity came naturally to him—he helped anyone in need, without a moment’s hesitation. People of all ages were drawn to his calm presence, his easy smile, and the gentle way he moved through the world. He didn’t have to say much; his character spoke for him.

He and his wife cherished their trips to Panama City Beach, their own little escape. They danced together every night they could—right up until his health wouldn’t allow it. Those dances, full of love and laughter, were the kind that linger in the heart long after the music fades.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Emily McCormick Massey; children, David Moorer (Kelly) Massey, III and Amanda Massey (John) Wolf; grandchildren, Laura Whitney Scurlock, Christopher (Katlin) Bohannon, Ashby (Mikaela) Massey, Cody (Waverly) Bohannon, John Wesley (Lucy) Wolf, Natalie (Chris) Jones, Katelyn (Stephen) Cruce, Spivey Massey, Connor Massey, Emma Massey and Samantha Nelson; sixteen great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Julie McCormick Yelverton; nieces and nephews, Stephanie (Steve) Piper, Emily (Jim) Jones and Keith (Chasity) Sewell – all of whom brought him endless joy.

Funeral services will be Saturday, November 22, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home of Selma with Bro. Ken Blake officiating. Visitation will begin at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m., prior to the service.

David leaves behind not just memories, but a legacy built of devotion, craftsmanship, kindness, and a love story that will be told for generations.
