George Richard Thames

November 29, 1961 — June 8, 2025

George Richard Thames, Jr. passed away June 8, 2025 at the age of 63. He was born November 29, 1961 to his house parents, Roddy and Frankie Cahoon.

He was preceded in death by his house mother, Frankie Cahoon; mother of choice, Rosa Towns; son, Justin Phillip Thames; granddaughter, Charlotte Grace Brackin; brothers by choice, Hayes Pettaway and Matthew Bracewell.

In his cherished career, George devoted himself to being a counselor at Safety Net, where he found profound fulfillment working with at-risk boys. His compassionate heart and unwavering dedication helped guide many young lives toward brighter futures. Coupled with his commitment to this vital work was his partnership with his beloved wife, Tracy. Together, they managed her beauty shop, a space that buzzed with energy and laughter as they worked side by side, ensuring that every client was treated with efficiency and care.

George's greatest pride and joy emanated from his family. He adored his children and reveled in the time spent with his grandchildren. Each moment shared, whether filled with laughter or quiet connection, became a treasured memory etched in the hearts of his loved ones.

Known for his remarkable sense of humor, George possessed a quick wit that kept everyone on their toes; one could never quite anticipate what he would say next. This delightful unpredictability was paired with a loyalty that defined his friendships. Those fortunate enough to call him a friend knew they had a bond that would last a lifetime. George believed wholeheartedly in supporting his friends, standing by them through thick and thin, embodying the essence of true camaraderie.

Outside of his professional and familial commitments, George embraced his passions. He loved reading, particularly delving into books on history, which sparked his curiosity about the past. Music was another beloved interest, filling his home with melodies that stirred the soul. Furthermore, his fascination with shortwave radio allowed him to connect with distant voices, a testament to his ever-curious spirit. Yet, among all his hobbies, it was his family that remained his most cherished pursuit—everything else paled in comparison to the joy they brought him.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Tracy Bond Thames; house father, Roddy Calhoon; daughter, Alanna Thames; son, Samuel Thames; daughter/grand, Kilee-Ann Thames; granddaughter, Sara Eden Brackin; aunt, Valerie (Ron) Underwitter; brother by choice, Duck (Lynn) Bracewell; sister by choice, Felecia (Ashley) Strickland and numerous friends he chose as family and his beloved companion, Carly Joe.

Visitation will be Saturday, June 14, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home of Selma. A celebration of life will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Nicholas Gandy officiating.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Cecilia Smith for being a great caregiver for her dedicated care, along with everyone from Aveanna Hospice.
