Ret. Col. James B. Ellison, a devoted family man, passed away May 5, 2025 at the age of 91. He was born October 11, 1933 to the late Council Elwood Ellison and Louise Mildred Blackburn Ellison.
Growing up, James pursued his education with unwavering determination, first at Calera High School and later graduating with an Associate's Degree in Business Administration from George C. Wallace Community College. His commitment to learning did not stop there; James further enriched his knowledge through a wealth of military education, including the prestigious Command and General Staff College.
James proudly served for over 37 years in the Alabama Army National Guard, achieving the rank of Colonel before retiring in 1988. His military career was marked not only by remarkable achievements but also by a profound sense of duty to his country and fellow citizens. He exemplified what it meant to lead through service.
Beyond his military and academic accolades, James was deeply involved in his local community. He served as a deacon at Fairview Baptist Church, where he dedicated a significant part of his life teaching Sunday School. His commitment to his faith was a cornerstone of his character, inspiring those around him to uphold their beliefs and values.
Known for his generosity, James had a reputation for always lending a helping hand to friends, family, and even strangers. His selflessness touched many lives, and he took great joy in giving back to the community that he loved. James’s warmth and compassion made him a pillar of support in times of need.
An avid outdoorsman, James found immense joy in deer hunting with his friends, continuing this beloved tradition even into his 80s. These moments were not just about the hunt; they were about camaraderie, laughter, and the shared love for nature. Family gatherings were another cherished part of his life, where stories were shared, memories forged, and bonds strengthened.
James Bibb Ellison leaves behind a legacy of kindness, service, and love that will continue to resonate within the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. His life was a testament to the values of duty, family, and community, and he will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege to call him friend, mentor, and family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louanne Weston Ellison; siblings, Council Dalton (Patricia) Ellison and Janice Ellison Culver.
He is survived by his sons, David James Ellison and Jerry D. (Janet Hill) Ellison; grandchildren, Justin Keith (Jessica) Ellison, Jason Tyler (Courtney Kendrick) Ellison and Jessica Ellison Bowman; great-grandchildren, Weston Keith Ellison, Reese Joy Ellison, Clayton James Ellison, Ware Michael Ellison, Fuller Dean Bowman, Whitney Ellis Bowman and Elizabeth Lou Ellison; sister, Alice Katherine Gail Ellison; and brother-in-law, Joseph Culver: nieces, Brenda Barbie, Mary Jo (Harold) Norman, Ann Collins, Debbie Ellison and nephew, Kevin (Julie) Culver.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 8, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home of Selma with Dr. Tom Stacey and Bro. Denny McLendon officiating. Interment will follow at New Live Oak Cemetery with Dr. Bill Gardner officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home, in Selma, beginning at 12:00 p.m., prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Justin Ellison, Jason Ellison, Weston Ellison, Clayton Ellison, Kevin Culver, Denny McClendon, Richard (Dick) Boozer and Glenn Stewart. Honorary pallbearers will be Joseph Culver, John W. Jones, Jr., Cecil Strickland, James D. Smith, Charles D. Ellis, Leonard Ingram, Condee Nason, Robert Owen, Kim Ballard, Kenny Hatcher and Harold Norman.
