James M. Trent Flournoy

James M. "Trent" Flournoy passed away January 28, 2026 at the age of 43. Trent passed away following a period of declining health related to his time in military service. He gave of himself in service to his country, a sacrifice he carried throughout his life. He was born February 9, 1982 in Selma, Alabama.

James forged a commendable career in the military, serving with honor in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Belleau Wood as a Boatswain's Mate for three years, and later dedicating three years to the U.S. Marines. His commitment to his country was further demonstrated through two tours in Iraq as a Combat Engineer, where he faced challenging circumstances with an unwavering resolve. James held his military service close to his heart, with pride illuminating each recollection of those formative years.

Education was another cornerstone of James's life. He attended the University of Alabama, pursuing a degree in Journalism, and further honed his culinary skills at Shelton State. His intelligence and analytical nature allowed him to approach life with depth and understanding, qualities that made him not just a soldier, but a thoughtful individual deeply engaged with the world around him.

James's personality was one of a kind—passionate, loyal, and steadfast in his beliefs. He was a devout Christian who loved the Lord and kept his convictions central to his life. Those who knew him found a friend who cherished his family and friends fiercely, and he approached each relationship with genuine care and commitment.

Beyond his military accolades, James had a diverse array of hobbies that brought him joy. He delighted in photography, capturing the beauty of life through his lens. Fishing—whether in the saltwater or freshwater—was a beloved pastime that granted him solace and tranquility. The great outdoors called to him, as he spent joyful days hiking and kayaking in the picturesque landscapes of Colorado. He found immeasurable happiness at the Mattersville Wolf Sanctuary in Sedalia, CO, where he worked and immersed himself in the care of these magnificent creatures. Travel brought him immense joy, offering him new experiences and perspectives that he relished.

James's departure leaves a profound vacancy in the lives of many, but the memories he created will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew him. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Nate Rainwater and his family for their unwavering friendship and care during James's life and beyond.

James M. Trent Flournoy lived with a passion that inspired those around him, embodying what it meant to serve, love, and explore the world. His legacy will forever be cherished, a testament to a life dedicated to both faith and the fervent pursuit of adventure.

He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Raymon Flournoy; grandparents, David and Jean Daniels; aunt, Elaine Tucker; sister-in-law, Kim Smith and several of his brothers-in-arms, fellow United States Marines with whom he shared an unbreakable bond of service and sacrifice.

He is survived by his mother, Debbie Lynn (Wayne) Walker; siblings, Brandon Smith, Jennifer (Brendan) Sansom, Layne (Molly) Flournoy, David Flournoy, Richard (Sylvia) Merriman, Brian (Shawna) Flournoy, Dale Flournoy, Ray (Deborah) Flournoy, Trey (Teri) Walker, Toni (Phillip) Galloway and Leslie Motley; nieces and nephews, Ellie Sansom, Evie Sanson, Ellis Flournoy, Beau Flournoy, Blake Flournoy, Thomas (Savannah) Nichols, Walker Motley, Chloe Motley; aunts and uncles, David Daniels and Mark (Patti) Daniels.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 5, 2026 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home in Selma, Alabama. He will be laid to rest at Alabama National Cemetery with military honors with the date to be announced soon.
