James Ballard McNeill, Jr. beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on February 23, 2026 at the age of 73, leaving behind a legacy of laugher, love, and adventure. James was born in Sylacauga, AL, and lived in Selma, AL, where he invested in the community through the Church, his law practice at Hobbs and Hain, and support in the local University of Alabama chapters.
James lived life with an infectious spirit and a big personality. He was quick with a joke, generous with a smile, and devoted to the people he loved. Family was at the center of everything he did, from the everyday moments shared at home to the unforgettable journeys that became treasured memories.
James was a beloved member of the Church Street Methodist Church where he invested his time, talents and love of community and family. He taught Sunday School for the Seeker’s class for 40 years where he shared his passion for understanding the teachings in the Bible and commitment to instilling the love of the church family. He was a Church Trustee, Church Council, Finance Committee, Usher and his favorite role, a lead Sunday morning breakfast cook.
James was a partner at Hobbs and Hain, P.C., where he was known for his sharp intellect, and commitment to his clients. He practiced law for 49 years and was a member of the Dallas County and American Bar Associations, Alabama State Bar and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. James also believed in mentoring the next generation of attorneys and he found the perfect opportunity to give back by teaching as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Alabama Law School where he taught during the Spring Semester.
James also had a lifelong love of the University of Alabama. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1974 with a B.A. in Political Science and the University of Alabama Law School in 1977. James was a huge sports fan for Football and Basketball and as a season ticket holder, he attended every home game. He loved the sports for the passion and camaraderie it brought. For as long as anyone could remember, he rooted for the Alabama Crimson Tide, cheering through every season. His enthusiasm for the game was more than fandom; it was a way to connect with others, share joy, and celebrate tradition. Whether attending the games or reminiscing about his favorite moments, Alabama Crimson Tide was woven into his identity. James was a member of the University of Alabama Alumni Association and he also held positions with the local chapter. He was the Dallas County University of Alabama Alumni Association officer where he proudly supported the scholarship program that helped Selma students that were attending the University of Alabama. James was also actively involved in the Dallas County Quarterback Club and Tuscaloosa Red Elephant Club.
Above all, James loved his family and friends fiercely. He celebrated their accomplishments, supported them through challenges, and made sure they always felt seen and valued. His humor, warmth and zest for life were gifts that his loved ones will carry forward.
James is survived by his wife of 49 years, Michele McNeill, his son, James McNeill (Ally), Daughters, Lauren Dunkin and Margaret Neal (Adam) along with 6 grandchildren, Jay McNeill, Maggie McNeill, Clara Dunkin, Bennett Dunkin, Jorie Neal and Mabry Neal who will forever remember his kindness, his jokes, and the sound of his laughter echoing at family gatherings and on long road trips alike. He was preceded in death by his parents, James McNeill, Sr (Babs) and Lurleen McNeill.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of James McNeill will be held at Church Street Methodist Church in Selma, Alabama on Monday, March 2, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Dianne Everette officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., prior to the service.
