James Thurman Smedley

James Thurman Smedley passed away on October 29, 2026, at the age of 86. He was born April 30, 1940, to the late James Woodrow Smedley and Rubye Perkins Smedley.

Jimmy devoted 32 years to his railroad career. An avid hunter and fisherman, he loved the outdoors and spent many hours fishing on the Alabama River. He also enjoyed farming and raising cattle.

He was preceded in death by his; son, Adam Todd Smedley; grandson, Brandon Joel Moseley; and granddaughter, Lacye Suzanne Smedley Story.

He is survived by the mother of his children, Bonnie Hester Smedley; sons, Mark Keith Smedley and Michael Shannon Smedley; grandsons, Hunter McClain Smedley, James Mark Smedley, Richard Martin Moseley, Murray Andrew Kilmury and Charles Owen Kilmury; granddaughter, Catlyn Kathleen Kilmury and grandson-in-law, Joshua Mark Story.

Funeral services will be Monday, November 2, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Pleasant Valley Methodist Church in Jones, Alabama with Bro. Greg Swanson officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home of Selma directing. Interment will follow in the church graveyard. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., prior to the service, at the church.

Pallbearers will be Mark Smedley, Michael Smedley, Hunter Smedley, James Mark Smedley, Murray Kilmury, and Owen Kilmury. Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Moseley and Joshua Story.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations to Jones Methodist Church Cemetery.
