Listen to Obituary

Janet Godsy, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and faithful servant of the Lord, passed away peacefully at the age of 93. Her life was a radiant reflection of her deep Christian faith, unwavering love for her family, and generous spirit toward all who knew her.

Janet was the youngest of six children raised by Derward and Jewell Copeland. She moved to Orrville, Alabama during her high school years and graduated from Orrville High School in the early 1950s. Her upbringing was rooted in faith, family, and a strong work ethic—values that would shape the remarkable life she led.

Janet spent much of her career as a dedicated civil servant at Craig Air Force Base until its closing. Never one to sit still, she later channeled her creativity and entrepreneurial spirit into founding a home fashion business in Selma, which she operated until her full retirement in 1992.

She raised four children of her own and was a mother figure to many others, offering love, guidance, and countless joyful memories. Whether camping, skiing, or simply spending time on the Alabama River, Janet created a haven of warmth and laughter for all who joined her.

Janet is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 35 years, Howard Godsy, her four children, Buzz Busby, Babs Bender (Lee), Mitzi Rollins (Brook). Grandchildren, Kaylon Cole (Shanna), Brandon Tucker, Will Busby, Christina Nelson, Lee Bender (Heather), Jennifer Rollins, Sarah Rollins, & Brook Rollins (Serena) and 7 great-grandchildren and her devoted caretaker Julia Powell. She is predeceased in death by her daughter, Shana Cole, daughter-in-love, Lisa Busby and granddaughter Breanna Busby; as well as her siblings; Dalton Copeland, Deward Copeland, Ouida Lunsford, Lurlene Henry and Mary Dunning.

Janet’s legacy lives on in each of those who survive her - in their faith, their love for family, and their compassion for others. Janet’s life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and her impact everlasting.
