Jean Johnson

February 23, 1919 — September 14, 2018

Jean Maas Johnson, child of the covenant, went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 14, 2018.  Both in her life and in her home going, she was a witness for the God she loved and served and to the family and friends she adored.  Jean was born on February 23, 1919, in Baltimore Maryland, to Dr. Monroe and Beulah Maas. She grew up in Selma, and after graduating from Smith College and completing a year in graduate work at Tulane University, she returned home with a desire to help others as a social worker.   Later in her life, for 14 years, she fulfilled that goal as a case worker, child welfare worker, and supervisor at the Department of Human Resources in Selma.

Jean loved Church Street United Methodist Church, where she was a lifetime member, and she also enjoyed being a member of the Trellis Garden Club and Pandora Dance Club.  Second only to her faith, were her cherished roles as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many. Throughout her long life, she continually blessed her family and friends with warm hospitality, her culinary skills, and the beautiful flowers she shared from her garden.

Jean is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, the love of her life, Donald L. Johnson.  She is survived by two sons, Don Johnson (Marty), and Philip Johnson (Vaughan); six grandchildren – Neil Johnson (Temma), Brian Johnson (Kara), Philip Johnson, Jr. (Paula), Kirk Johnson (Meredith), Vaughan Johnson Bolen (Hunter), and David Johnson (Megan); and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Services will be at Church Street United Methodist Church at 11:00 A.M., September 17, 2018, with the Reverend Lance Eiland officiating and Lawrence Brown- Service directing.  Visitation will be at 10:15 A.M. at the church. Pallbearers are Neil Johnson, Brian Johnson, Philip Johnson, Jr., Kirk Johnson, David Johnson, Hunter Bolen, Ralph Hobbs, Dick Morthland, Joe Moore, and Jim Thomas.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Church Street United Methodist Church or to a charity of choice.

The family is eternally grateful to the staff at Cedar Hill, the ER and ICU at Vaughan Regional, and the local UAB Family Practice residents for the care and compassion so generously given to our loved one.
