Jesse Mott passed away April 24, 2026 at the age of 90. He was born November 21, 1935 to the late William Dudley Mott and Sarah Addie Dunkin Mott.
Jesse devoted over 60 years of his professional life to R. L. Zeigler, where he worked in maintenance at the meat production plant in Selma. His commitment and skill were evident in every task he undertook. Early on, Jesse earned an associate of applied science in electrical studies from George C. Wallace Community College in Selma, a foundation that supported his lifelong dedication to his craft. His ability to work well with tools and machinery was a defining part of who he was, and he took great pride in his work.
Before his long career in Selma, Jesse served his country with honor, spending four years in the U.S. Marines followed by four years in the U.S. Air Force, including service during the Korean conflict. His military service reflected a deep sense of duty and patriotism—a value that shaped much of his life.
Family and loved ones were central to Jesse’s world. He shared 59 years of marriage with the love of his life, JoAnn, who preceded him in death. Together, they cherished their three beloved dogs—Little Bit, Lil Bit, both Maltese, and Cocoa, a poodle—who brought warmth and joy to their home. Jesse's playful spirit shone brightly through his ability to cut up and make his family and friends laugh, creating happiness even in everyday moments.
Away from work and family, Jesse found solace in the simple pleasures of life. He loved fishing in the Alabama River, a hobby that provided peace and quiet reflection. When not at the river, he enjoyed spending time in his shop, applying his handy skills to various projects. Many who knew Jesse can picture him sitting contentedly in his favorite spot on the porch swing—an image that captures his gentle and grounded nature.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, JoAnn Mott; son-in-law, Randy Plummer and grandson, Connor Mills.
He is survived by his daughters, Karen Plummer and Sharon (Donald) Scurlock; son, Michael Mott; grandchildren, Nicole (Joey) Gorenflo, Jessica Burnett, Justin Mills and Josh (Win) Plummer; great-grandchildren, Ryan Gorenflo, Collin Gorenflo, Caden Banks, Emmie Gorenflo, Carson Gorenflo and Everleigh Burnett.
He will be laid to rest at Pineview Memory Gardens at a private ceremony. Jesse will be remembered as a man of practical skill, loyalty, and warmth—a person who embraced life with a steady hand and a light heart. His legacy is one of steadfast dedication, both to his country and to those he loved. He leaves behind memories of laughter, devotion, and quiet strength that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
