June Rush Blackmon

June Rush Blackmon passed away August 5, 2026 at the age of 84. She was born June 13, 1942 to the late Robert Dewitt Rush and Hazel Elizabeth Heifner Rush.

During the formative years of her children’s education, June dedicated herself as a Librarian Aide at Byrd School in Selma, nurturing not just her own loved ones, but generations of students with kindness and patience.

In the 1980s, June took on the formidable task of purchasing and operating The Glasshouse Restaurant in Selma, where for 22 years she cultivated a haven for laughter, good food, and countless memories. Later, her entrepreneurial spirit bloomed anew with the opening of Junebugg's Flea and Antique Mall in Selma in 2009. These ventures were more than businesses—they were community landmarks, made memorable by June’s steadfast care and ceaseless hard work.

Her compassion was not limited to her professional pursuits. June’s heart belonged, too, to every living creature. Renowned for loving animals, she dedicated countless hours volunteering and fundraising for the Humane Society in Selma. Her acts of service didn’t stop there; she was moved by missions, especially Operation Christmas Child, for which she joyfully collected items to fill boxes for children throughout the year. With Shiloh Baptist Church, June traveled the Appalachian region carrying backpacks to the children of Kentucky—offering school supplies, meals, and the simple comfort of a caring touch.

Family, for June, was her heart’s greatest calling. She was involved with all of her grandchildren, showering them with hugs, attentive presence, and boundless encouragement. Every moment spent together was a testament to her deep love. Her giving nature radiated through everything she did, inspiring her family and all those blessed by her friendship.

June’s curiosity and passion for discovery found an outlet in the study of genealogy, a pursuit she treasured dearly. Together with her sister Mary, she authored the remarkable book “Am I My Own Grandpa?”, an extensive genealogical journey tracing their roots back to at least the 1600s. This work stands as a lasting tribute not only to her family’s history but to her tireless spirit for seeking connection and meaning.

She was preceded in death by her sister and best-friend, Marilee Rush Horton and her niece, Pam Cotter.

She is survived by her children, David (Sedera "Dee") Blackmon, Bill (Tammy) Blackmon and Wanda (Scott) Harrison; grandchildren, Justin (Mary Jo) Blackmon, Sarah Frances Blackmon, Haley Blackmon, Alex (Mary) Harrison, Olivia Harrison, Robert Blackmon, Daniel (Kally) Blackmon, Brandy (Mike) Jones, Brian (Claressa) Askew and Heather Askew; great-grandchildren, Teresa Atchison, Angela Hubbard, William Odom, Parker Dennis, Jason Harrison, Madelyn Harrison, Piper Ann Walton, Zachary Blackmon, Will Blackmon, Jacie Green, Bennett Blackmon, Danleigh Blackmon, Kaylee (Aaron) Hugg, Cayden Askew, Coy Askew, Hannah Barkley; and her niece, Karen Horton.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home of Selma with Dr. Bill Gardner officiating. Interment will follow at New Live Oak Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., prior to the service at the funeral home in Selma.
