Marilyn Kay Hatfield Shumate went to be with Jesus on April 9, 2026 at the age of 72. She was born January 25, 1954 to the late William Dozier Hatfield, Sr. and HenraEtta Moschel Hatfield.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Sonja H. Miller, Gene E. Hatfield, R. Wesley Hatfield, W.D. Hatfield, Jr., Alfred E. Hatfield, Charles Hatfield, Callie Hatfield, Richard Hatfield, Christine H. Clark and numerous nieces and nephews.
Kay will be remembered for her deep love of God, which she expressed through her joyful singing of His praises and through her unwavering devotion to her family. She was a cherished member of the gospel singing group, Deliverance Gospel Singers, and a faithful member of Summerfield Baptist Church for over 40 years.
Kay retired from Selma City Schools, where she faithfully served in the Child Nutrition Department and shared God’s love with the children she encountered each day. A lifelong resident of Selma, Alabama, she carried her faith and kindness into every aspect of her life.
She was a devoted and loving wife to her husband, Donnie, for 54 years, a dedicated mother to her children, and a proud and adoring grandmother to her six grandchildren. Kay extended her love beyond her own family, opening her heart and home alongside her husband to foster numerous children, reflecting her deep compassion and commitment to serving others.
She showed grace and kindness to everyone she met and had a special gift for making people feel welcome and cared for. Kay also found joy in celebrating life’s moments, and her home was always beautifully decorated for each holiday and season, reflecting her warm and joyful spirit.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Donnie Shumate; son, Brandon (Kim) Shumate; daughter, Audrey (Kevin) McNiese; grandchildren, Bryanna Shumate, DonAllen Shumate, Joshua Nielsen, Henley Nielsen, Hunter McNiese and Brookelyn McNiese; siblings, Larry (Angela) Hatfield, Janice (Bobby) Roseberry, Elizabeth (Beth) Johnson and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Monday, April 13, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. in the chapel of Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home of Selma with Dr. Ryan Skiebe officiating. Interment will follow at Pineview Memory Gardens. Visitation will begin at the funeral home in Selma at 11:00 a.m., prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be DonAllen Shumate, Alan Shumate, Greg Cherry, George Tarver, Jed Kirk and Kevin McNiese.
In Lieu of flowers please make donations in her memory to Summerfield Baptist Church, 72 Main St., Valley Grande, Al 36701.
