Mary Patterson

December 6, 1943 — June 14, 2017

Mary Ann Morthland Patterson succumbed to the injuries of a stroke and died peacefully on June 14, 2017.

A graveside service will be held at the Old Live Oak Cemetery in Selma at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17, 2017, with the Rev. Daniel Gilchrist officiating.

A native of Selma, Mary Ann was born on Dec. 6, 1943, the daughter of Rex J. Morthland and Ann Cooper Plant Morthland.

She was a graduate of Parrish High School class of 1961.

She attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority.

She graduated in 1965 with honors, and married Marshall Scott Patterson, whom she met while at the university.

After graduation, they lived in Selma briefly before Scott returned to the Air Force to fly in the Vietnam.

The Pattersons lived in many cities during Scott’s career in the service. In 1980, the family returned to Selma to renovate and live in the Plant family home.

Scott joined the Peoples Bank and Trust Company, and Mary Ann became a real estate broker and partner in Heritage Real Estate.

In her personal life, Mary Ann was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church and the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America.

She adored and was adored by her family, dogs and close personal friends who were extended family. She was blessed with a tremendous love of life, love of people and a grand sense of humor throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents.  She is survived by her husband, Marshall Scott Patterson; her son and daughter-in-law, William Marshall Patterson III and Christina Waller Patterson of Franklin, Tennessee; her daughter and son-in-law, Ann Plant Patterson Powell and Andrew Graham Powell of Baltimore, Maryland.  She is also survived by four grandchildren, Adam Santos-Powell, Sefa Santos-Powell, Annie Cooper Powell and Elizabeth Chilton Powell; her brother and sister-in-law, Richard Plant Morthland and Roberta Martin Morthland; her sister and brother-in-law, Edith Plant Morthland Jones and John Larry Jones; her sister-in-law, Jan Patterson Adams; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
