Mary Rowell, aged 80, passed peacefully on August 26th, 2021 at Thomasville Regional Hospital of Pneumonia after an extended residency at Thomasville Nursing Home.

She is preceded in death by her Husband of 50 years, John Harvey Rowell, Sr. and her brother John Macon McCormick, Jr.   Survived by her four children; John Harvey Rowell, Jr. (Lin Marie) grandchildren Maridith Apple (Steven) of Longmont, Co., Elizabeth Hall (Nicholas), Trint Rowell and Joanna Torrijos, and her precious great-grand daughters Kaitlyn and Amelia, all of Greenville, South Carolina; Julie Lyons (Godfrey) of Selma, Libby Bradford (Glenn) of Grove Hill, Ala., granddaughters Mary Katherine, Margaret and Marlee, all of Mobile, Ala. and Jennifer Jones (Lebo) and Kenley Kauffman, KaLee Jones and Trey Jones of Safford, Ala.

She is also survived by her brother-in-law Bobby Rowell of Helena, Ala.  her sisters in law, Alicia Edwards McCormick (John) of Gulf Shores, Ala, Myrtle Mitchell (Larry) of Hartsville, Ala and Shirley Wiggins (Michael) of Fairhope, Ala. and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Born Mary Elizabeth McCormick on July 16, 1941 in Selma, Alabama to John Macon McCormick, Sr.  and Julia Bert Jones, both from Dallas County, Ala. She was raised in Selma, graduated from Parrish High and married John Harvey Rowell on Feb. 27, 1958 in Buena Vista Ga.

Mary grew up in the Church Street Methodist Church in Selma. She was born again in Christ in 1984 and she and John were involved for many years at Christ the King Cathedral, CEC. until they moved to Fulton, Ala. in 2006 where they attended Fulton Baptist Church with family and neighbors.

Her greatest pleasure outside of family were the special friendships of her childhood and her Bridge Club throughout the years. They supported each other through babies, weddings and funerals over a lifetime.

Mary’s gift was Hospitality and she welcomed everyone through her many social and work activities and was involved with many local organizations over the years, including the Selma Charity League, Sabra House Sanctuary and the DAR, William Rufus King Chapter and Elizabeth Bradford Chapter. She possessed a true mother’s heart for a generation of young people through the Church, Sports and School. Mary and “Big John” were happiest with a houseful of people and when they could help others.

Visitation will be at Lawrence-Brown Funeral Home Thursday September 2 from 9 to 11 with a graveside service following directly at New Live Oak Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Lee Tate, Keith Waldrop, Glenn Bradford, Lebo Jones, Trey Jones and Trint Rowell. The Service will be Live Streaming through the Funeral Home for those unable to attend.
