Listen to Obituary

Wayne McKenzie passed away August 1, 2026 at the age of 70. He was born January 16, 1956 to the late Kenneth B. McKenzie, Jr. and Arden Marion Goodson-McKenzie.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Marion Goodson "Butch" McKenzie; sister, Merrily Arden McKenzie Thompson and sister-in-law, Sheila Harrell McKenzie.

Born and raised in Montgomery, Wayne carried with him the values of kindness, perseverance, and humility throughout his life. Wayne found much of his life’s purpose serving his community, notably devoting over twenty years to Piggly Wiggly—formerly Marion Food Valu—in Marion, Alabama. His dedication to his work was evident to all who shopped in those aisles, not only through his commitment but in each friendly greeting, every shared laugh, and his willingness to help wherever he could. Earlier in life, Wayne worked at the Performing Arts Center in Selma. There, he touched the hearts of many, not just as a steadfast presence behind the scenes, but also each holiday season when he donned the red suit as Santa at the Holiday House.

Wayne’s passions extended beyond his work. He delighted in simple pleasures and the company of friends. Years ago, he found camaraderie and fun as a member of the bowling league at Playland Bowl in Selma, where strikes and laughter came in equal measure. Wayne was a proud Alabama football fan, never missing an opportunity to cheer on his beloved team. He was also known for his love of animals, always showing kindness and affection toward his furry companions and the creatures that crossed his path.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Kim Taylor McKenzie of Sprott; brother, Kenneth B. "Buddy" McKenzie, III; sister-in-law, Cindy "Bunny" Wilson McKenzie; brother-in-law, James W. Thompson; three nieces; one nephew; five great-nieces and two great-nephews.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home of Selma with Pastor John Nicholson officiating. Interment will follow at Ephesus Baptist Church in Sprott. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home in Selma, prior to the service.
