Dorothy Capps

March 19, 1922 — September 22, 2020

On September 22, 2020, Dorothy W. Capps passed away peacefully at age 98 after a brief illness. Born on March 19, 1922, to the late Burton Lyle and Nina Ruth Whitcomb, in Selma, Alabama, she lived her whole life as an active member of that community.  She was united in marriage to Huey H. Capps on December 12, 1941. He preceded her in death on January 21, 2006. They were married for 64 years.

Dorothy was the mother of three children. However, there were others who considered “Dot” their surrogate mother.

When Dorothy’s children were young, the phrase “stay-at-home-mom” didn’t exist. It was usual for women to stay home with the children while their husbands worked.  In her younger years, Dorothy had the opportunity to be very active in her church; from being President of the WMU, to the pastoral search committee, being a member a cradle club, teaching Sunday school, and working with the boy scouts. She loved being with her family more than anything else in this world. Throughout her life, she was an active member of the Trellis Garden Club, the Epicurean Club, and was a founding member of the La Ridotto Club.  Dorothy was an avid bridge player and spent her later years enjoying the company and camaraderie of those ladies with which she shared that passion.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter Nina Jean Capps, her son Michael H. Capps (Rhonda), her son Dr. John G. Capps (Katherine), four grandchildren: Heather C. Hoyle (Mike); Michael H. Capps, Jr. (Sarah), Adrianne C. Veres (Jeff), and John-Eric H. Capps, and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Jerry Light officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing. Interment will be in New Live Oak Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bennie Lewis, Lane Duncan, Morgan Duncan, Kerry Craig, Bob Owen and Jack Smitherman.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested any donation be made to Selma Habitat for Humanity, 1004 Keith Way, Selma, AL 36701
