Sharon Benn

November 26, 1944 — August 23, 2020

On August 23, 2020, Sharon Ann Boumel Benn, loving wife and mother died after a long illness at the age of 75.  Sharon was born November 26, 1944 in Washington D.C. She graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in Washington D.C.

Sharon was a homemaker and full time mother for many years.  As her children grew, she worked as a travel agent for All World’s Travel Agency in Selma, Al. After a blind date and a quick courtship, she married Alvin (Al) Benn on December 27, 1964.  Al was the love of her life and constant companion.  As the wife of a newspaper man she accompanied him all over the south - Birmingham, Alabama; Decatur, Alabama; Natchez, Mississippi; Alexander City, Alabama; Lafayette, Georgia and finally to Selma, Alabama where she remained a resident for over 40 years.  They raised two children together.  Their daughter Danielle Benn (Curtis) Waters of Mills River, NC and Their son Eric (Maria) Benn of El Paso, TX.

Sharon was a proud Bubbie to four loving grandchildren.  Benjamin Waters, Scott Waters, Alexandria Benn and Ilan Benn.  She enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and cheering them on in sports and other events.

Sharon was full of smiles, hugs and love.  She shared her sweet love and joyful personality with everyone that she met.  She was a member of Mishkan Israel Congregation in Selma, Alabama and Temple Beth Or in Montgomery, Alabama. She was active in the sisterhood during her life.  She babysat for St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Selma, Alabama. She enjoyed fellowship and breakfast with the membership as well.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents: Daniel Boumel and Sophie Honikman Boumel Waldeman.  She is survived by her husband Alvin (Al) Benn, Daughter Danielle Benn Waters, Son Eric Benn, Grandchildren Benjamin Waters, Scott Waters, Alexandria Benn and Ilan Benn, brothers: Barry Schwartz and Jerry Boumel, and several cousins, nephews and nieces.

She was lovingly cared in her home for the past two years by a group of wonderful caregivers: Evelyn Huff, Williestein “Pie” Hatcher, Carolynn Bonner, Gloria Edwards, Delphine Olivia Sherman, and Denen Ross.

Sharon’s burial will be officiated by Rabbi Scott Looper from Temple Beth Or on September 4, 2020 at 10:00 am with Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing. In person attendance will be limited to family only. Friends and guests are invited to join the family online at http://watchlawrence.live ,where the service will be live streamed on the funeral home's Facebook page.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Outreach Group; Selma, Alabama.
