Stewart Champion, Jr.

December 15, 1936 — June 18, 2020

Stewart McWhorter (Mac) Champion, Jr. passed away Thursday, June 18, 2020, at the age of 83 and is now in the arms of his Lord and Savior.

Coach Champion was born and raised in Hayneville, Alabama.  He attended Auburn University and was a member of the 1957 National Football Championship team.  He was known by many as a great football Coach but more importantly, he was a great man of God.

He is preceded in death by his father, Stewart McWhorter Champion and his mother Lillian Knight Champion, one brother, Jasper Knight Champion and one sister, Mary Mac Scarborough.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Cassandra Traylor Champion; one son Bryant Traylor (Sarah) Champion, three daughters Carol Champion (Chuck) Lambert, Margaret Champion (Britt) Mott, and Nancy Champion (Frank) Elliott;  eight grandchildren Carrie (Patrick) McGowan, Tray (Leah) Champion,

Todd (Lauren) Bradford, Justin (Corey Kate) Lambert, Leah (Eric) Chandler, Laura Cameron (William) Murphy, Aly (Pitt) Hughes, Elizabeth (Ashley) Bowers; and 17 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Traylor Champion, Tray Champion, Todd Bradford, Justin Lambert, Dalton McGowan, and Caden Champion. Honorary pallbearers are all former football players of Coach Champion and deacons of the Hayneville Baptist Church.  The family is grateful for the devoted care provided by Ometrice Logan, Stevonica Logan, Tracie P. Martin, Vivian Cook, Linda McAlpine, Wilmeshia Payton, Miley Williamson, and Angie Wheeler.

A private family service and burial will be held at 11 am on Saturday, June 20, 2020, at Hayneville Baptist Church with Reverend Lee Tate officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.

Memorial contributions can be made to Hayneville Baptist Church.
